Since the implementation of EIP-1559, the Ethereum network has fundamentally changed how it handles transaction fees. Instead of all fees flowing to network validators, a significant portion is now permanently removed from circulation. This process is known as “burning.”

What is Ethereum Burning?
Burning refers to the permanent destruction of ETH tokens. When you send a transaction on Ethereum, you pay a fee. Under the current system, this fee is split into two distinct parts:
- Base Fee: The mandatory cost to include a transaction in a block. This amount is burned (sent to an inaccessible address).
- Priority Fee: An optional “tip” paid directly to the validator to incentivize faster processing.
Why Was This Introduced?
Before EIP-1559, fee markets were volatile and inefficient. By burning the base fee, Ethereum introduced a deflationary pressure mechanism. The primary goals include:
- Predictability: The base fee adjusts algorithmically based on network congestion.
- Economic Sustainability: By removing ETH from circulation, the network creates a counter-balance to the issuance of new tokens, effectively reducing the net inflation rate of the asset.
The Impact on Supply
It is a common misconception that the total supply of ETH is shrinking rapidly. While burning reduces the speed at which new ETH enters the ecosystem, the network still issues rewards to validators. Whether Ethereum is “deflationary” or “inflationary” depends entirely on network activity.
When the network is highly congested, the base fees collected can exceed the amount of new ETH being minted, leading to a net decrease in total supply. During periods of low activity, the supply may still grow, albeit at a much slower pace than in the pre-EIP-1559 era.
Ethereum’s burning mechanism serves as a vital economic tool. It aligns the interests of network users with the long-term value of the token. As Ethereum continues to scale, this mechanism ensures that high demand for block space directly benefits the ecosystem by making ETH scarcer. For investors and users, tracking “burn rates” provides a real-time window into the health and utility of the Ethereum blockchain.
