If you are a registered voter in Florida and wish to update your political party affiliation, the process is straightforward. Florida is a closed primary state, meaning that for primary elections, voters can only vote for candidates of their registered party. Keeping your information current is essential for participating fully in the electoral process.

When to Update Your Information
You can update your party affiliation at any time. However, to be effective for a primary election, you must submit your change at least 29 days before that election. Changes made after this deadline will not take effect until after the primary has concluded.
Methods to Change Your Affiliation
You may update your voter registration using the following methods:
- Online: Visit the official RegisterToVoteFlorida.gov portal. This is the fastest and most efficient way to submit an update. You will need your Florida driver’s license or state ID card number, the last four digits of your Social Security number, and the issue date of your ID card.
- By Mail or In-Person: You can complete the Florida Voter Registration Application (Form DS-DE 39). You can print this form from the Florida Division of Elections website or pick up a paper copy at:
- Your county Supervisor of Elections office.
- Any office that issues driver’s licenses or state IDs.
- Public libraries or government offices;
- Driver’s License Renewal: You can update your voter information when renewing your driver’s license or state ID card through the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV) website or at a physical branch.
Important Eligibility Requirements
To ensure your update is processed, remember that you must be:
- A citizen of the United States.
- A legal resident of the Florida county where you are registering.
- At least 18 years old (you may pre-register at 16).
- Not currently adjudicated mentally incapacitated regarding voting rights.
- A person whose voting rights have been restored if previously convicted of a felony.
Once your application is processed, your county Supervisor of Elections will mail you a new voter information card reflecting your updated party affiliation. Stay active and informed to ensure your voice is heard in every election.
