How to give dog medicine by mouth

Administering medication to a canine can be a stressful experience for both you and your pet․ However, with the right techniques, you can ensure your dog receives their treatment safely and effectively․

The “Hidden Treat” Method

The easiest approach is to disguise the medication in highly desirable food․ Try wrapping the pill in:

  • A piece of cheese or deli meat․
  • A commercial “pill pocket” treat․
  • A small spoonful of peanut butter (ensure it contains no xylitol)․

Always offer a plain treat first, then the medicated one, followed by a final plain treat to encourage swallowing․

Manual Administration

If your dog refuses treats, you may need to place the pill directly into their mouth:

  1. Positioning: For large dogs, straddle them or place them against a wall to prevent backing away․
  2. The Grip: If right-handed, use your left hand to hold the top of the dog’s head․ Place your thumb and index finger over the upper jaw to gently open the mouth․
  3. Placement: Place the pill as far back on the tongue as possible․
  4. Swallowing: Close the mouth gently and hold it shut․ Stroke the throat downward or blow lightly on the nose to trigger a swallowing reflex․

Administering Liquid Medication

When using a syringe, follow these steps:

  • Place the tip of the syringe into the side of the mouth, just behind the lower teeth․
  • Slowly squirt a small amount at a time․
  • Pause between squirts to allow your dog to swallow comfortably, preventing gagging or choking․

Important Tips for Success

Praise is essential! Always use a happy, calm voice before, during, and after the process․ Never force the medicine if the dog is panicking, as this increases the risk of aspiration․ If you feel overwhelmed or unsure, contact your veterinary clinic․ A technician can demonstrate these techniques to help you gain confidence․ Remember, consistency and patience are the keys to keeping your pet healthy and stress-free․
