Why Bally Sports is Not on Hulu
The absence of Bally Sports on Hulu comes down to ongoing carriage disputes, corporate restructuring, and high costs associated with regional sports networks (RSNs)․ Over the past few years, Diamond Sports Group (the operator of Bally Sports networks) has gone through complex financial challenges, including Chapter 11 bankruptcy restructuring․ During this period, many major streaming platforms—including Hulu + Live TV, YouTube TV, and Sling TV—dropped or never carried the networks due to disagreements over pricing structures and how channels should be packaged for subscribers․
Because platforms like Hulu prefer to keep monthly subscription costs manageable for the average user, they have largely resisted adding expensive RSNs that only appeal to localized sports viewers, rather than the entire national subscriber base․
Alternative Ways to Watch Bally Sports
Even though Hulu does not carry Bally Sports, you still have options if catching live regional games is a priority for you․ Depending on your location and favorite teams, consider these alternatives:
- FuboTV: Fubo historically carried regional sports networks, though channel availability varies significantly depending on your specific zip code․ It is wise to check their current channel lineup using your local address․
- DirecTV Stream: This service is widely considered one of the best choices for regional sports fans․ Their “Choice” tier and above typically include local RSNs, including Bally Sports channels, depending on your region․
- Bally Sports+ (or Diamond Sports streaming apps): Diamond Sports Group offers a direct-to-consumer standalone streaming subscription․ If available in your team’s broadcast market, you can subscribe to the app independently of any traditional cable or live TV streaming package․
What You Get with Hulu + Live TV Instead
While you won’t get Bally Sports, Hulu + Live TV remains a powerhouse for overall entertainment, news, and national sports broadcasting․ Your subscription typically gives you access to:
- National Networks: ESPN, FS1, FS2, CBS Sports Network, and NBC Sports for major national events, college sports, and professional league broadcasts․
- Local Broadcast Channels: ABC, CBS, NBC, and FOX affiliates, which often broadcast local NFL games and major weekend sporting events․
- The Disney Bundle: Incredible value including Hulu’s vast on-demand library, Disney+, and ESPN+ (which features thousands of additional live college events, soccer, tennis, and NHL games)․
Tips for Regional Sports Viewers
Before making any major changes to your streaming subscriptions, always take the following steps:
- Check Your Zip Code: Streaming availability changes constantly based on media rights and geography․ Use channel lookup tools on provider websites․
- Evaluate Total Costs: Compare the price of adding a standalone RSN app versus upgrading to a more expensive live TV streaming provider like DirecTV Stream․
- Consider Blackout Restrictions: Keep in mind that local blackout rules still apply to many games, even if you subscribe to a streaming service․
