The question of whether entertainment is a biblical concept is a complex one, with no simple “yes” or “no” answer. While the word “entertainment” itself doesn’t appear in Scripture, the Bible does offer principles and narratives that shed light on how believers should approach leisure, joy, and engaging activities.

Biblical Perspectives on Joy and Celebration
The Bible is replete with instances of joy, celebration, and communal gatherings. The feasts and festivals commanded in the Old Testament, such as the Feast of Tabernacles and the Passover, were times of great rejoicing, remembrance, and fellowship. These were not merely religious observances but also opportunities for communal bonding and expressions of gratitude to God.
In the New Testament, Jesus himself attended and participated in celebrations, most notably the Wedding at Cana, where he performed his first miracle, turning water into wine. This event, while miraculous, also highlights the human element of celebration and social enjoyment. The Apostle Paul, in passages like Philippians 4:4, encourages believers to “Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice!” This suggests that joy and positive engagement are not only permissible but encouraged.
The Dangers of Idolatry and Wasting Time
However, the Bible also warns against the dangers of excess and idolatry. Proverbs 21:17 states, “Whoever loves pleasure will become a poor man; whoever loves wine and oil will not be rich.” This verse, and others like it, caution against allowing pleasure or leisure activities to become the sole focus of one’s life, leading to neglect of responsibilities or spiritual pursuits.
Furthermore, the concept of stewardship extends to our time. Ephesians 5:15-16 urges believers to “walk carefully, not as unwise but as wise, making the best use of the time, because the days are evil.” This implies that our leisure time should be spent in ways that are edifying, restorative, and do not detract from our service to God and others.
Wisdom in Choosing Entertainment
Therefore, the biblical approach to entertainment is one of discernment and wisdom. Believers are called to evaluate their choices based on several criteria:
- Edification: Does the activity build us up spiritually, mentally, or emotionally?
- Glory to God: Can we, in good conscience, thank God for this activity, and does it reflect positively on His character?
- Impact on Others: Does it lead others astray or cause them to stumble?
- Stewardship of Time: Does it consume an unhealthy amount of our time, neglecting other important duties?
- Avoidance of Sin: Does it involve or promote ungodly behavior, attitudes, or content?
Activities that are wholesome, creative, restorative, and do not lead to sin or idolatry can be considered biblically permissible and even beneficial. This could include engaging with the arts, enjoying nature, spending time with loved ones, or participating in healthy recreational activities.
